The CMAS Open - Villefranche 2024 Concludes

Villefranche-sur-Mer, France, 1 July 2024 - The CMAS Open - Villefranche 2024, otherwise known as the 11th French Freediving Championship, saw 43 athletes from 7 nations compete.
The iconic waters of the Villefranche-sur-Mer bay were brimming with freediving athletes on June 28 - 30, 2024. The 11th French Freediving Championship, held by FFESSM (French Underwater Federation, a member of CMAS), also acted as a qualifier for French athletes to be selected for the CMAS French National Team. Of the 43 athletes that participated, 10 were newcomers to the competitive freediving world. This is the twelfth edition of the competition.
Athletes competed in all four depth disciplines, with the deepest performances reaching 105m (344ft) in CWT, 105m in CWT-B, 100m (328ft) in FIM, and 71m (233ft) in CNF, including performances from Arnaud Jerald, Alice Modolo, Abdel Alouach, and Eddy Laffin.
Additionally, the counter ballast system used in the competition is electric - one of only two in the world, with the other located in Turkey. It consists of a cable with video, a light at the bottom, and an excellent ascent speed in the event of an emergency retrieval. Accompanying the counter ballast system were sonar and live video of the athletes’ performances, courtesy of Diveye.
While conditions for weather, depth, and current are usually favorable at this time of year, this year’s edition of the event saw current and unfavorable winds. The organizing team canceled the last few dives of the second competition day to ensure the safety of athletes and competition staff.

The competition was organized by a highly qualified team, including three World Champions and three experienced international judges, one of whom was Arnaud Ponche. Safety was a top priority, reflecting FFESSM's long-standing commitment to training safety personnel. All members of the organizing team held at least a freediving instructor-level certification, ensuring a high standard of expertise. The safety training for the event was particularly rigorous. It involved the safety team practicing various scenarios both before the competition and at the competition site.
