Love is in the air. Can you feel it? Valentine’s Day is the global celebration that signals the need for public displays of affection (PDAs) with our significant other. This usually results in flowers, gifts, candlelit dinners, and a warm embrace. We historically turn our amorous attention to our partners who share every aspect of our lives. But what about that special someone you keep on the side for special occasions? I’m talking about your dive buddy.
Being a good freedive partner requires attention, knowledge, skill, trust, and knowing they will make good decisions in a bad situation. It takes a lot of time and experience to form a strong bond like this, just like the rest of your loved ones. So, this Valentine’s Day, we at Molchanovs want to acknowledge our other intimate partners and share some love with our dive buddies who keep us safe.
To that end, we’ve asked some of our freediving staff what they look for in a great dive buddy. Here’s what they said.
“The first thing I do is debrief before even getting into the water. I look for someone who communicates openly, is safety conscious, pays attention, and isn’t reckless in their diving. I ask myself, do I trust my life with this person and feel safe?” - Amanda
“I look for someone who is passionate about what they do and professional. Someone who knows that things can go wrong but remains calm and handles the situation professionally.” - Kseniia
“Freediving, for me, is a form of meditation—a chance to completely disconnect from everything else. That’s why trust is the most important quality in a dive buddy. When I know my buddy has my back, I can truly let go, focus on the dive, and immerse myself in the moment.” -Liza
“In a dive buddy, I seek more than just a match in skill and experience. I look for trust, calmness, and someone who is focused and alert yet brings a sense of ease to every dive. Most importantly, someone who truly makes me feel safe. With the right buddy by my side, every dive feels like bliss." -Zuzana
“My perfect buddy is someone I can trust and where I can let myself go. Someone with whom I feel safe without having to reassure myself. A positive attitude is also important.” -Bianca
“Trust is key, and for me, the freediving mindset needs to align. My buddy and I have similar ways of diving and think the same way about safety and setting up a line. We know that what we agree on will happen, no surprises. Similar skill levels are important, too. I don't feel comfortable with a safety that can't perform the same rescue tasks I can.” - Fruzsi
“My buddy is my mirror, reflecting honest feedback and keeping me aware. But they’re also my shield, creating a safe space and handling every detail so I can dive with total peace of mind. In the deep, trust is everything.”-Daniel
